This Iranian-American duo takes the refugee crisis to heart and they have every reason to do so. A few years ago, the two brothers themselves fled from Iran to New York. There they built a new life for themselves with art as their main motive. Icy & Sot are best known for their iconic artworks, exposing society. For example, they once left a gigantic, crumpled dollar bill on Wall Street.
In Ostend they placed a black fence on the beach, with barbed wire and a door. In doing so, they addressed the refugee crisis and called on beach visitors to make their own choice: an open or closed door? The door symbolizes the future, opportunities and openness.
The pond in the Leopold Park was also fitted with an installation: an out-of-place floating boat surrounded by empty life jackets.
These temporary art installations can no longer be visited in Ostend.
