Street art used to be cartoonish and loud. Until Case Maclaim stepped in. The German artist is seen as the one who blurred the line between graffiti and painting. For his mural at the Ensor Institute, he draws from James Ensor’s Self-Portrait with Masks (1899). The white smiley, a recurring element in his work, appears here as well. The result is a portrait that hits as sharply as sea air.
