If there is anything that Matthew Dawn has no lack of, it is attention. To the contrary. Nevertheless, the artist does not care so much for fame. He created a series of figures to illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of a sojourn in the limelight. His work in Ostend is the third in a series: a self-portrait wearing a paper crown, intended to question ego and fame. Or, as the Belgian artist puts it: ‘The crown symbolises ego or fame. That it is made of paper shows how insignificant it is, while the fact that it covers my eyes shows how blinding ego and fame can be.’

This artwork was painted over by Hera in 2024.
